Case of the Month (Emma Scurrell February 2014)

Conjunctival foreign body in a dog

A 5-year-old female entire Border Terrier has had a discrete mass of the palpebral conjunctiva surgically excised and submitted for histopathology.

Fig 1.  Within the conjunctiva is a discrete inflammatory mass that contains a linear piece of foreign material (arrow).

Fig 2.  A closer look at the foreign body reveals a piece of plant material that is surrounded by granulomatous inflammation. Multinucleated foreign-body type giant cells line its surface.

Final Diagnosis

Conjunctival pyogranuloma associated with intralesional plant material

Discussion

Excision was complete in this case and should be curative. A foreign-body granuloma can be added to the differential list for a conjunctival mass.
